The Chinese have been the world’s most successful drug-maker by a far greater margin than any other. They’ve already spent $1.1bn on advertising for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra (sildenafil) since its approval in 1998, according to industry-leading research firm IMS Health.
But some of the more sophisticated and innovative companies are now facing the daunting challenge of selling Viagra in the first place.
“It’s really a shame because it’s a little embarrassing to sell Viagra in China, but it is also a bit embarrassing for the public to get a prescription for Viagra in China. It’s really embarrassing for the patients and the government. That’s not the way it’s done,” said Dr. Ravi Narula, a consultant for Pfizer. “In China, it’s hard to sell prescription drugs, and so it’s hard to get an erection if you don’t have a prescription.”
Viagra, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, has a high price tag and many patients are afraid it will be available only in some regions. Pfizer, the world’s largest drug maker, has recently introduced a generic version of Viagra, called sildenafil, for a cheaper price.
Pfizer’s Viagra sales in China reached $1.2bn in the first three months of this year, according to IMS data. But it has been squeezed by a series of generic competition, including those in Europe and the US, which have made it difficult for the market to compete.
Pfizer’s decision to start selling sildenafil is due to the government’s decision to impose additional tax on the profits of the drug maker. This would force the company to pay the price for the new product and make a profit of more than $1bn. The price is set to be raised at a later date.
Pfizer has said it will increase its price to compensate the price difference between the two brands, which would add an additional $50 to the price it paid Pfizer for Viagra. The company had previously paid $1.3bn for sildenafil, after it stopped making the deal, and Pfizer, however, still expects to receive a more favourable price.
IMS Health research data shows Viagra sold in China by Pfizer in its first three months of use, with sales of $1.1bn and $1.5bn for its generic version. Sales of sildenafil grew by a factor of 6 to 10 in the first three months of this year, compared with the same period in 2004.
The company has also been making Viagra available on the Chinese market. The Viagra patent expired in October, but Pfizer is yet to launch the generic version. The company is working on a number of marketing and sales initiatives.
“I’m not worried about marketing, but I do worry about sales,” Narula said. “We are very much on the right track. We’ve always been able to attract some of the best brands in the world.”
Pfizer has also been trying to attract the best by launching its own version of Viagra, which is still sold in the US in two strengths: 25mg and 50mg.
Sales of the 25mg version of Viagra rose 7.8% in the first three months of this year, while sales of the 50mg version, which costs a fraction of the price, went up 2.1%.
Pfizer, however, has been trying to convince the public to buy the 50mg version because it is cheaper.
“It was a big challenge at the time, but now we have an opportunity to make it a reality for the public. I think it’s very important that people don’t think of the brand as a pill and they should think of the Viagra as an erection,” said Dr. Narula.
“If people aren’t paying attention to the price, then they should buy it,” he added. “The way they pay is more important. If they buy it in a foreign country, then they should buy it in China.”
But drug makers are not all bad.
The first drug dubbed a “Poppers” in Australia was in late September last year, after it was found to be contaminated with a dangerous substance called Viagra.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized more than $4m worth of the drug and other pharmaceuticals that are linked to the contamination, including two prescription medicines used to treat impotence.
The first drug dubbed a “Poppers” in late September last year was found to be contaminated with a dangerous substance called Viagra.
The FDA’s investigation found the drug, which was marketed as Viagra, was found to contain the chemical sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. The drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, said the FDA’s findings were “clear”. The FDA said it found that sildenafil was not found to be associated with the contamination.
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Revatio, was found to contain sildenafil and the ingredient found to contain the chemical sildenafil citrate, the main ingredient in Viagra.
The FDA said the company had received reports that the drug had been found in the blood and in the test results, which were not confirmed by the laboratory.
“This is a serious issue that has been referred to the FDA for a review,” said Dr. Peter Stoddart, the FDA’s chief medical officer. “This is the first time a drug has been found to be associated with a potential risk of a potentially life-threatening reaction in a patient.”
Sildenafil, which was first developed in the 1960s, is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, and the brand name Revatio is a generic version. It is available by prescription only.
The FDA said it was investigating the issue because the company was aware that a substance contained in the drug could cause serious side effects and drug interactions. The agency did not have details of the drug’s safety information, including if it contained sildenafil.
“The FDA is aware of these concerns and is working with local law enforcement and health authorities to address the situation,” said Dr. Aaron Kesselheim, director of the FDA’s MedWatch unit.
In an email to The Wall Street Journal, a spokesman for Pfizer said the company was reviewing the case.
“The company will continue to follow the FDA’s lead,” said Pfizer spokesman Brian Kockel. “The FDA is concerned that the FDA has not been consulted with our laboratory and that the product may be contaminated with sildenafil, a potentially dangerous substance.”
Pfizer said it had received reports of an association between Viagra and a recent drug called “Viagra.”
“The FDA is taking an important step to ensure that any information received is accurate and accurate. The agency is working with a number of healthcare providers, including physicians, to ensure that all information is accurate and to work with the FDA to resolve any questions that may arise,” said Pfizer. “This is an important step in ensuring that all information is accurate and that all persons are advised to refrain from taking any drug that may be associated with a risk of serious side effects or drug interactions.”
The FDA is looking for information on the risk of serious side effects associated with the drug sildenafil, and it has received two reports of a drug called “Sildenafil Citrate” that has been linked to the contamination.
The drug is marketed under the brand name Revatio, and it has been sold by Pfizer since the early 1990s. Sildenafil is also sold under the brand name Viagra.
The FDA said it was investigating the issue because the FDA’s investigation was led by Dr. Aaron Kesselheim.
Dr. Jonathan Smith, a clinical professor at the University of Sydney and a professor at the University of Melbourne, said the FDA was concerned that the company had not been consulted with its lab and that the drug may be contaminated with sildenafil, a substance that may cause serious side effects.
